A 47-year-old female asked:

what homeopathic way(s) can i treat my shallow breathing?

Many options: First, do you really mean homeopathic? Homeopathy is a specific system of healing & many confuse it with holistic or herbal medicine. Homeopathy is highly indidualized- 10 people with shallow breathing will probably need 10 different medicines- so you need to see a homeopath! i also advise breathing exercises- see the tao of natural breathing by dennis lewis. Breathing: The Master Key to Self Healing is a good CD on breathing by Andrew Weil. Back to homeopathy- of all the many forms of healing I've studied it is my favorite, but it is subtle and it is necessary to work with a skilled homeopath. A 40-year-old member asked:

Is it normal to feel like I am breathing fast in the 3rd trimester?

Dr. Megan Bird

Depends: As the baby grows, it presses up on the lungs and certain muscles in the ribs relax and you may feel like you are taking shallower breaths more often. But if this happens suddenly or you feel like you are really struggling, you need to see someone right away. Blood clots in the lungs are also more common in pregnancy and can be very serious.
A member asked:

Will breathing into a brown paper bag help slow down my baby's fast breathing?

Dr. Douglas Tzanetos

No: No, and this is potentially dangerous for babies and children. Do not worry about breathing that occasionally looks like it is fast or comes in quick little gasps in babies. This is usually normal. However, if babies are breathing so quickly that they have difficulty feeding or making a high pitched squeal when they breathe or wheezing with quick breathing, you should see your pediatrician.

Yes: A hiatal hernia is the stomach protruding into the chest cavity, which can affect one's breathing.

Is a magnetic mattress compatible with a breathing machine for apnea?

Don't see why not: I can't imagine the magnetic aspect of your mattress would interfere with the operation of your CPAP machine. Shouldn't be a problem.

18 and just diagnosed as asthma free. Taken off my meds. My breathing is bad but will it get better over time?

Dr. Joseph Bouvier

Depends: It may but asthma can reoccur even after being symptom free for along periods of time. Even though you may not need you medicines at present, i would keep your rescue meds available for any unexpected emergency.
