Not necessarily.: Sometimes the xr and a good history is all that is important.

Depends on finding: Chest xray involves less irradiation. An obvious abnormality such as large area of atelectasis or large area of airtrapping might show up without the need for CT. If chest xray is normal or equivocal physician might order CT if underlying cause related to diseases not entirely recognizable on ordinary chest radiograph. Subtle air trapping and minor atelectasis could be recognized
