If you have pain: You have an injury. Now, go to the podiatrist and find out what the injury is.I.E a fracture of the bone, a tendonitis etc. And get treatment. If it is a fracture and you keep walking you can delay healing and make matters worse. Don't walk thru pain, the pain is your body's way of signaling to you something is wrong.

Swelling: Fifth metatarsal injuries are common. They are either fractures or tendon injuries. Both hurt when walking, tendon injuries are near the base of the metatarsal and radiate up to the ankle. Fractured areas stay swollen and hurt when touched. Both problems require treatment, i suggest you see a podiatrist for x-rays and examination.

5th metatarsal: It is important that you see a physician and have a x-ray to determine if you have a fracture. If there is a fracture then treatment options usually consist of crutches, boot/ cast, or surgery. There is a chance that a fifth metatarsal fracture may be a “jones fracture” and have a high risk for nonunion, or failure to heal properly.
