Rarely serious.: Almost everyone gets constipated at some time during their lives. It affects approximately 2% of the population in the U.S. Women & the elderly are more commonly affected. Though not usually serious, constipation can be a concern. Constipation is usually caused by a disorder of bowel function rather than a structural problem.

Lack understanding: Constipation is not as simple as many doctors think. The route cause needs to be evaluate especially if someone does not respond readily to dietary modifications, osmotic laxatives or stimulants. There are a variety of medical conditions and learned behaviors that can give rise to it as well as abnormalities in the pelvic floor in both men and women. Careful evaluation can determine the cause.
