Fear?: When one realizes how infinitesimally, insignificant we really are in the scope of the whole universe I think one finds it frightening. God provides a safe and difficult to disprove answer. Add to that the facts that ones parents, church etc have drilled the absolute certainty of god into ones little brain since early childhood and it becomes a hard superstition to shake.
