The only time...: ...I would worry about that is if the baby fails to gain weight properly on the bottle. Also, it is very hard to know exactly how much the baby is getting from the breast. And i saw a baby once that was incapable of drinking from certain types of nipples - changing the bottle the family used cured the baby of failure to thrive!

If..: ...The baby is gaining weight and the breastmilk production is good, usually there's no need to supplement with formula. Otherwise different nipples might help, or even change to higher calorie formulas.
