It is just a guess..: I am sorry to hear of father being so ill. Based on the info your provided, he is indeed quite ill--the condition is very advanced and treatments won't be easy. When a doc provides a "time-to-live" is only an estimate based on similar conditions of other patients he/she had seen or reported in the literature. He may survive longer or shorter. Best is work with his doc and make plans. Good luck.

Average: The doctor is basing this on averages and yes, unfortunately the average is measured in months. Get all the help you can. If his focus is on minimizing suffering then ask for hospice help. If his focus is on trying to slow down this cancer with palliative radiation and/or chemotherapy (if a candidate for either) then ask for palliative (or still possibly some hospices) help.
