Conservative Care: Start with rest, ice or heat. Could consider an anti-inflammatory medication such as over the counter ibuprofen. If no better in a couple of days, consider requesting that your primary care physician refer you to physical therapy.

Weight loss+exercise: The most common causes of back pain (without radiation into limbs) is poor core strength, extra weight, smoking, and excessive drinking. You should exercise to create core strength (may want to start with a physical therapist), lose weight, stop smoking, etc. See you physician for a specific discussion. Surgery for back pain is less effective than long term exercise/therapy.
