Big Question: If referring to over-the-counter, assuming that there are no health problems or contraindications, i usually recommend tylenol (acetaminophen) extra strength 2 twice daily. Have liver function checked if continued long-term basis.

See a rheumatologist for evaluation and professional management.

Patient specific!: All nsaids give pain releief and there is no one best for all patients with arthritis, or any specific type of arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, or psoriatic arthritis. Some patients do better with one, others with a different medication. As a clinician i may try 2-3 different medications to find one that works best. I am not discussuing narcotics, since few need these!

Exercise: Exercise (gentle stretchings, walking, swimming) is one of the best things you can do for arthritis pain; its better than over-the-counter, its free. You can take supplements such as combination of glucosamine and chondroitin. Additionally, you can also take painkillers such as advil or tylenol (acetaminophen) or aleve.
