My ankles, particularly the right one, often swell up and the joint generates pain, what could this be?

Ankle arthritis: Asymmetrical ankle arthritis and pain most often follows trauma, even years later. It can also have "internal" causes such as gout and other forms of inflammation. Work-up by rheumatologist is needed.
