Kissing: Epstein barr virus the cause of mononucleosis is spread by kissing. Once you are infected you shead virus in your saliva for 18 months, long after you've recovered.

EBV: Ebstein barr virus is shed in urine, saliva, stool, & respiratory droplets. Up to 90% of the population has had exposure to this virus by the age of four. Ebv is in the varicella-herpes family (human herpesvirus4) & is very contagious accounting for the fact that most have been infected at a young age. If adults acquire the disease, 35% go on to have mono. Virus can be excreted for years.
