Yes, at times: Acute arthritis attacks cause pain and in doing so immobility. Our movements help keep our extremities from swelling....So an attack can lead to some swelling if associated with immobility.

Swelling/arthritis: Some types of arthritis are associated with swelling in the joints including four and rheumatoid arthritis. However, it usually does not include the whole limb.
