Do nothing: You have a lot of sensory nerve receptors in the tongue. Your tongue is always curious about new things in the mouth. Over time you will get used to the new topography and wont notice it anymore.

Probably can't: If your new appliance is bothering you, use orthodontic wax to soften the edge or wire, whatever it is that is bothering you. After some time it will no longer bother you. Try to leave it alone, if you can. We find kids get used to appliances much faster than adults do.

Ortho appliance: That cannot be prevented - but what you can do is to make sure your tongue is as comfortable as possible. One way is to use silicone wax to cover any rough areas from the orthodontic appliance. Silicone wax can be purchased anywhere in the 'ear plug' section usually used by swimmers to cover their ears, or you can ask your orthodontist.

Tincture of time: In time your tongue, lips, cheeks, will get used to all those annoying gadgets. In the meantime 1. Take an advil (ibuprofen) before you get into bed. It will make the appliances seem less irritating. Rinse w 1tsp salt in 8 oz warm water before bed. 3. Put orthodontic wax on any rough spots. Ask your orthodontist for some, or check the dental section in a drug store. 4. Dab orabase-b onto sore spots.
