Orthodontist: I could consult your orthodontists. but beware-- I have never found NAYONE who starts referring to fixed appliances as "FUnctional orthodontics" to be anything but a sham. If someone is even using this phrase, I would ask where they did their orthodontic residency and beware.

Not usually: Traditionally, functional appliances are made for growing patients. However, many of the same concepts from functional appliances can be distilled and used with modern orthodontics. Bite Turbos are an example. You should speak to your orthodontist (and make sure you are seeing a doctor who has orthodontic residency training).
