Both are ok: Both neurosurgeons and fellowship trained orthopaedic surgeons treat spinal disorders. It is worth your time to learn about your surgeon before considering surgery. Hopefully, your primary care doctor can help to point you in the right direction. The most important thing to do is to make sure that the surgeon you choose has expertise in treating your problem. Depends: When you are considering seeing a surgeon whether they are an orthopedic or neuro- surgeon you should be asking yourself am i willing to do that if needed? If the answer is yes, then investigate which kind you want to be seen by. Both are capable and have their plus/minus and really depends on the training they attained. Often reviews can help you make your decision as well, vitals.Com is good.

Good question: Both types of providers operate on the spine, and both will likely not operate unless their procedure can repair something anatomical. Either provider is accustomed to visiting people with back pain. What is your reason for asking? Referral to either also depends a bit on what the problem is. For scoliosis or a fracture, orthopedics. For spinal cord compression, neurosurgery.
