A member asked:

What is the difference between a neurosurgeon and an orthopedic spine dr? i went to pain management today and the dr said he thought i'd end up needing surgery on my neck for pinched nerves.the xray showed bone spurs & disc space narrowing?

The fields of neurosurgery and spine orthopedic surgery overlap. It would be wise to pick a surgeon with excellent training and experience with a good reputation.

You may find that both neurosurgery and orthopedics will work together at time of potential neck surgery. Would get consults from both specialities and evaluate proposed approaches. BUT, the presence of bone spurs and disc space narrowing alone, would not be an indication for immediate surgery (assuming there is not spinal cord risk).
