Need more info: Inguinal lymph node enlargement is not uncommon, but large enough to simulate a hernia is unusual. He should see a doctor and follow up with them if there is any change in this.

Nonspecific : Enlarged lymph nodes in the groin can mimick a hernia. Could be indicative if a wound on the same lower extremity, or could be an occult hernia. May need a dynamic ultrasound or ct scan to be sure.
