Probably lymph nodes: The lymph nodes behind the ear filter waste from the scalp and part of the skull known as the mastoid. It is unlikely that food or medications caused them to enlarge. An infection or irritation of the scalp, ear, or mastoid could do so. If the tenderness continues to increase, lasts more than a few days, or if the swelling lasts more than a month, you should see your doctor about them.
