Functional scan..: Renal scan is usually ordered to evaluate arterial flow to the kidneys as well as cortical concentration and excretion of tracer. Lasix (furosemide) renal scan is used to rule out obstruction. Dmsa renal scan can be used to evaluate for pyelonephritis / scarring.

Different reasons: Renal scan uses radiotracer such as Tc MAG3 injected intravenously to assess function of kidneys to determine presence of obstruction to kidneys, function of kidneys, and amount of kidney tissue. Sometimes renal scans with Tc99m DMSA used to determine scars or defects in kidneys related to infection.
