Test: The dentist will place a cold object like a piece of ice on your tooth and you let the dentist know when you feel the cold in the tooth. The sensation should go away with in 10 sec of your tongue warming it with no residual ache.

Simple evaluation: The cold test is an easy evaluation to test the health of the nerve tissue in a symptomatic tooth. The results helps to guide your dentist to the best treatment recommendation based on the prognosis of the nerve in your tooth.

Just Touch a Tooth: Cold testing is done to check the state of health of the pulp...that's the organ inside a tooth which keeps it alive with blood supply and nerves. In a healthy tooth, the pulp reacts in predictable ways to a cold stimulus. In a sick tooth, it responds differently. So, cold testing is just what it sounds like: the dentist touches something cold to the tooth and records the response. Shouldn't hurt.
