My week old babies heel prick tests have come back, and an abnormality was shown for congenital hypothyroidism. what should i do?

Peds endo ASAP: True congenital hypothyroidism is a medically urgent condition needing a pediatric endocrinologist asap. Abnormal results from the newborn state screen should prompt this through the baby's pediatrician. Untreated congenital hypothyroidism will cause developmental delays by damaging the brain.

Screening vs testing: An initial + screening test is reason for a visit to your pediatrician's office within days to do confirmatory testing locally & available the same day. If the problem is confirmed your ped can often start treatment & arrange for a consult with a pediatric endocrine specialist. I find as many as 1/2 of the initial tests are falsely positive, meaning nothing is really abnormal, but real +'s need rx.
