Yes: The wire in dental retainers are usually made from stainless steel. Stainless steel can develop rust. It is much less likely to rust but it can still rust. There are over 150 grades of stainless steel and some are more prone to corrosion than others. Generally, the higher the chromium content, the less likely the steel will rust.

Have never seen it: Reputable orthodontic laboratories use chrome-cobalt stainless steel wires, which do not rust or corrode. When retainers not worn (and go looking for reasons to put them in, not excuses to take them out), put them into plain water or denture cleaner.

It is possible: Retainers have metal pieces that can rust over prolonged exposure to water. Therefore, do not soak your retainers overnight in water.
