No real difference: A regular 2d ultrasound can detect many problems. I do not believe that 3d ultrasounds offer that much more. Possibly a 3d ultrasound may be better at evaluating cleft lips and facial abnormalities.

Better localiztion: 3d scans are a misnomer but they present the anatomic information in a different format to aid disease detection and localization. The images are not truly 3d, they take the 2d data set and manipulate the data to see the patient's anatomy from different view point.

3D 41% better: 3D allows radiologist to "see through" the normal breast structures and uncovers 41% more cancers. Also, 3D allows a 15-30% decrease in recalls sparing many anxiety and lost time. 3D still requires compression and increases radiation but negligibly and it is still of paramount importance to come every year beginning at age 40.
