Does cone beam computerized tomography (3d scan) detect cavities?

It Can...Sometimes: Cbct is not designed to detect cavities. However, if the dentist/oral surgeon is looking specifically for them, they can usually be detected on a 3d scan. However, traditional or digital dental radiographs (x-rays) are much better at identifying cavities.

Not ideal: Of course you can see large size cavities on a ct but it is not a diagnosing tool for cavities.
