Evaluation: To best give focused treatment advice, should be evaluated and examined by a sports medicine specialist (including sports physiatrist or orthopaedist). To start with, in general, ice the knee, rest it, elevate, modify activities to avoid pain-provoking maneuvers. If no contraindications (e.g. No stomach ulcers, kidney problems, heart disease, high blood pressure), can take short-term nsaids.

Injury: Knee injuries can be complex and very debilitating. Treatment depends on what has been injured (collateral ligaments, patellar tendon, acl/mcl) and what is necessary for repair and recovery. A visit to an orthopedic surgeon is best way to determine the extent of the injury and if further treatment is required. Usually, therapy is required after orthopedic repair.
