Some thoughts...: They could be cysts, little fluid filled sacs, that are generally harmless but sometimes could become inflamed. It'd be good to have your son's doc take a feel of them - don't need to have him go to an urgent care or ed, but just a regular visit, especially if they've been there for a long time.
