Tooth & Jaw Pain : Ibuprofen is a good place to start. Most people can take 600 or even up to 800mg (4 tablets), up to every six hours. A cold pack to the painful area is helpful too. Keep the cavity area very clean, brush it gently but thoroughly, and rinse with listerine to kill as many mouth germs as possible. For jaw pain, eat a soft diet, no gum chewing.

A lot of pain?.: If the pain is constant or wakes you up at night, or comes on for no reason, you need a root canl. Must see a dentist. Meanwhile only painkillers over the counter. If finances are issue try going to a dental school, fees are lower.

Ibuprofen: Ibuprofen or tylenol (acetaminophen) will give you relief for a short while, but constant pain means you may need more than a filling. If infection is causing this pain, you need to see a dentist as soon as possible, otherwise you may end up in the emergency room.

Otc medication: Look to see if there is a hole in a tooth and then place an otc temporary filling. Dont wait too long so that an abscess doesnt develope. Oralgel can be used for a very short term of several days only.

Don't kid yourself: You are trying to postpone the inevitable and are headed for more pain, problems and expense, plus possibly loose the tooth. Forget insurance they are there as an aid not to support you. The previous advice is correct, but you need to see your dentist yesterday before it became a problem. Don't expect the insurance to take good care of you. They are in the business to make money for themselves.
