There is no right : Answer. It depends on the severity of the cold, type of surgery and other medical issues. If possible, choices that lead to decreased narcotic use or a non-general technique may be advised.

No single answer: The appropriate anesthetic is determined after a history and physical and other tests (pulm functn, blood gas, etc). It is the severity of the illness and the organ reserve that will determine how someone fares with an anesthetic whether its a ga or a spinal or something else. The more severe the COPD the more likely to stay clear of ga if possible but not always the case and not alway possible.
