Complementary drugs: Galantamine (galantamine hydrobromide) & memantine work through different mechanisms and are complementary, not an either-or choice. The two doses you mention are both starting doses, not maintenance doses. Onset of action of either drug may be as long as 3 months. It is better not to initiate both drugs simultaneously but wait until patient achieves maintenance dose is achieved before introducing the other.

Not equivalent: Galantamine (galantamine (galantamine hydrobromide) hydrobromide) is in a different class of medicines than memantine so they are not equivalent. The combination of memantine and a cholinesterase inhibitor such as galantamine (galantamine hydrobromide) is used in moderate to severe dementia to decrease behavioral symptoms. The combination appears to work better than either alone.
