Coughing blood: Couging up blood is not typical, and usually represents some process going on inside the lungs. Thus, the doctors it seems want to do a bronchoscopy to see if it is due to an infection, or possibly due to cancer. Sounds very reasonable.

Hemoptysis: Hemoptysis coughing up blood should not be taken lightly especially in some one who does or has smoked. Most common cause is bronchitis but other more severe things can cause. Bronchoscopy passing a lighted fiber optic tube into airway allows inspection biopsy if indicated and washings for cytology., additionally cultures can be obtained for bacterial and fungal organisms.

Yes: If she is coughing up blood and there is a spot on the lung, then, based on the size of the lesion, doctors may recommend a bronchoscopy. Decision to do this procedure is based on history, physical and radiologic data.

Get the bronchoscope: Getting the bronchoscopy done is important. The most important thing to rule out is cancer. Otherless common things like fungal infections can be diagnosed from bronchial washings and samples this way too. Very important to have this study done as soon as possible.
