Clogged oil glands: One possible explanation for awakening with red eyes is blepharitis, a condition of backing up of the eyelash oil glands. The bacteria that normally live in those glands overgrow causing a mini-infection in each gland. Talk to your eye md.

Dryness or exposure: You may be sleeping with your eyes not completely closed - not something that you would be able to tell yourself. Try using an artificial tear gel when you go to sleep or take a nap. When you get up, if the eyes feel a little "gluey" use some hot compresses for a minute or so to get rid of the excess gel.
