Support: A good mattress needs to be able to provide support for your spine, yet still be comfortable. A worn mattress looses its ability to support the spine and will often lead to back pain. A temporary measure for a worn mattress is to place plywood between your mattress and the box spring. This may firm up the mattress and temporarily provide you with more support. Flipping the mattress may also help.
