Redness or drainage: After any type of minor surgery (removal of birthmark or mole), watch for infection. An infection may cause redness around the area, swelling, more tenderness, or a pus discharge. If it is not looking right, have it checked by your doctor.

Infection: If the area is enlarging, swelling, hot, tender, red more painful, has streaks emanating from it or pustular discharge - those are signs of probable infection.
