Doctor can evaluate: For a young adult who is very slim and has trouble gaining weight, a primary care doctor can evaluate to see if there is a medical problem. Possible problems include hormonal issues and digestive disorders. However, some people are genetically "skinny", so the doctor will want to know what the person's body build was like during childhood, and what the body builds of his parents and siblings are.
