A member asked:

Why would one vaccinate a child whose mom has hep b (hepatitus b)?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Prevention: Hep b is one of the most durable & dangerous hepatitis viruses & the cause of chronic unrecognized liver disease in infants. Administration of the hepatitis vaccine & globulin at birth has been shown to prevent the spread from a mother with active b, to the child at birth & later in life. Since this was started in hawaii > two decades ago, the rate of liver failure in the state has dropped.
