Can, not commone: Most rib fractures are relatively minor and will heal on their own over time you might just need some rest and pain meds until it heals over 6-8 weeks but some severe rib fractures with displacement can cause lung injuries and would obviously need much more elaborate treatments for the lung problems.

Yes: An x-ray is required to diagnose a puncture. Be careful this can be life threatening.

Rib fractures : Yes it can puncture a lung. Simple rib fractures are treated conservatively with pain management only. Certain rib fractures that result in breathing difficulties and / or relentless pain are treated surgically. I use titanium plates to repair the chest wall.
