CPAP: The most noninvasive treatment is the use of a continuous positive air pressure machine(cpap). This will force air through the blockage which is usually the base of the tongue. There are some surgical procedures which can help such as uppp but only if you have extremely enlarged tonsils and a very broad and long uvula. Weight loss is useful if you are extremely overweight.

Options: The CPAP machine and the many variations of CPAP are the "gold standard" of care for sleep apnea. But many people can't tolerate the machines for a variety of reasons including comfort, claustrophobia, etc. I get a lot of referrals from sleep specialists in the quad cities to make these patients oral mouthpieces, designed to bring the mandible forward and hold it there which opens up the airway.

Treat or cure.: You can treat sleep apnea with a CPAP or BiPAP mask worn at night. If you're overweight, you can actually cure sleep apnea with weight loss; then you wouldn't need the mask.
