A member asked:

What can be prescribed for a uti if nitrofurantoin didn't work. is there a second line drug?

Yes: It depends on allergies, other meds, whether or not your are pregnant, and whether or not a culture was done. Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) (a sulfa drug), ciprofloxin and Amoxicillin are common alternatives. If a culture was done, it generally directs your doctor to the right drug.

Yes: there are many other drugs. nitrofurantoin only works if your GFR is over 60. (That number may have been lowered to 30).
