Many possibilities: Simply not having periods may lower estrogen. That may be from premature ovarian failure, or hormone treated endometriosis (gnrh); found in association with scoliosis and diabetes. Low estrogen times of the cycle seem to be associated with greater incidence of post traumatic stress, thinking backwards, there may be neuro-hormonal signals that suppress estrogen levels. Pituitary/ovarian: As always, a thorough history and physical exam by a medical doctor is a must. The pituitary gland stimulates the ovaries to produce estrogen so there might be a problem with the pituitary gland (located in the brain) or the ovaries may not be producing adequate estrogen. Some common causes are eating disorders, excessive exercise and excessive stress.
