Bumps on tongue?: Those bumps or protrusions are called papillae and house the taste buds. There are four types of papillae present in the human tongue: fungiform papillae, filiform papillae, foliate papillae, and circumvallate papillae. They allow us to sense the five basic tastes of sweet, bitter, sour, salty and umami.
