Not in charge: You are not in charge of your friend's timing -- he is. However, you can gently encourage him to seek help; ask about any fears he might have & address them. If his depression is affecting your relationship, you can talk with him about that. If you know his family you can also speak with them about your concerns -- but from your age (23) i'm guessing that your friend is an adult also. Good luck.

Keep encouraging: It's hard for to convince a depressed person to see benefits of treatment as it is the nature of illness. Keep encouraging him to seek treatment. Support him and keep an eye on his condition especially if you see hopelessness as it can lead to suicidal ideation.

Depends on his diagn: May be he has poor insight and judgement and is not unusual for people like that to be brought for mental health evaluation by their significant others. Good luck.
