There are minimal : Direct effects on the fetus from the delivery of medications through an epidural or spinal. Some drug crosses the placenta, but not typically enough to be clinically noticeable.

See below: I assume you are talking about a baby during delivery. In this case the epidural has no effect. Th local anesthetic and narcotic commonly in the epidural infusions are in too small a concentration to affect the fetus. If you are talking about the use of an epidural to decrease pain after an operation on a child then please write note to me. Hope this helps.
