Several, but rare: Probably the most common is headache, which happens in about 1/100 patients. It's not dangerous and will go away, but can be severe. Other risks include bleeding, infection, temporary breathing difficulty, failure to provide the desired pain relief, and damage to nerves or spinal cord. Make sure a board-certified anesthesiologist is in charge of your care if you need a spinal or epidural.

Extremely rare is damage to nerves. Sterile technique is important as well as an experienced and well trained anesthesiologist.
