For kidney failure: A kidney transplant is needed if an individual no longer has sufficient kidney function to produce urine and remove waste products. There is a long list of kidney diseases that can result in kidney failure. Some occur in children who are born with damaged kidneys and others develop kidney failure later in life. After a kidney transplant, normal kidney function is restored.
