Possible trouble: A clot in the leg has the potential to cause serious problems. If dislodged, the clot can travel to the lungs and cause a pulmonary embolism. Once diagnosed, a patient with a DVT can be treated in several ways. There are oral and injectable medications aimed to prevent and treat clots. Filters can be placed to prevent clots from reaching the lungs.

There is obstruction: When a pt has a blood clot, it is referring to obstruction of venous blood flow. This can be caused by a hypercoagulable disorder, stasis, or injury. Regardless of the cause, it places the person at risk for pulmonary embolus and death. Long term risk includes chronic ulcers and leg swelling. It requires prompt treatment with blood thinners and sometimes thrombolytic medication.

Blood clot in the leg: A blood clot in the leg, or deep venous thrombosis, is when the blood thickens in one of the veins in the leg, causing a "jelly" consistency collection of solid blood clot to form within the veins. Just like the plumbing system in your home, if the veins in the body get plugged up with clot, the blood flow slows and the leg can develop problems.
