Numbness & tingling: Numbness, tingling, or burning sensations in the thumb, index and long finger are very common in carpal tunnel syndrome. Awakening from sleep and "shaking out the hands" to get relief is commonly reported by patients with carpal tunnel syndrome. Evaluation by a surgeon dedicated to surgery of the hand and upper extremity is appropriate if you have these symptoms.
