No.: Mild cramping and significant emotional stress are typical aroudn/after amniocentesis. Most operators do not use local anesthesia as its administration would hurt more than the amniocentesis itself. Take some tylenol (acetaminophen) right before the procedure to numb the colicky cramps that follow. Risk of loss of pregnancy is between 1% and 1/1000 cases.
