does banana peel whiten teeth?

No: Banana peel does not white teeth effectively or safely.
Dr. Zhiqiang Huang

NO: It is recommened to consult with your dentist for teeth whitening. There are many variations such as in-office whiteing with zoom lights or pure chemicals, in-home whiteing with trays or strips or the combination. Your dentist will evaluate and provide you the best option. Over-the-counter products are not suggested because each patient has different need and limitation for whitening.
Dr. Mike Deldar
Cosmetic Dentistry 24 years experience
No: I do not think so, and I do not suggest do in it specially if you are not sure they are clean and have been washed.
Dr. Thomas Stelmach
Cosmetic Dentistry 39 years experience
No: There is no peroxide in banana peel so it can't bleach your teeth.

A member asked:

The gums above my two front teeth are swollen and I need them to go back to normal within 72 hours what do I do?

Dr. Jake Richards
Dentistry 12 years experience
Brush, rinse, floss: Brush and keep them clean, floss them gently and try rinsing with warm salt water in that area specifically. Rinse for a minute or so or as long as you can. This should help it go away. If the swelling is not going away you need to see your dentist to have it checked out. Good luck.

Be seen again: If you are still having problems and your symptoms are not getting better, a second exam by your doctor would help in deciding whether you need additional treatment. Depending of the severity of your symptoms, your doctor will likely decide on placing you on a short course of steroids to help in reducing the swelling of your tonsils. Also, another exam will help in ruling out tonsillar abscess.

A 23-year-old male asked:

I heard that rubbing a banana peel on my teeth for 2 minutes will whiten them is that true?

2 doctor answers3 doctors weighed in
Dr. Theodore Davantzis
Dentistry 40 years experience
Not really: If that were true, there would be no need for all of the whitening products on the drugstore shelves or the professional products available from your dentist. Everyone would just be rubbing banana peels on their teeth and have snow white smiles. You will need to use products designed to whiten teeth, after calculus and stains are removed.
