A member asked:

If a person with tx-resistant depression is put on 80mg prozac (fluoxetine) for a wk and has no side effects or reported benefits, does it make sense to try 120mg?

Work w/your doctor: This is something that you really need to work with your own physician on. 80mg/day is quite a large dose already --and personally, i wouldn't change the dose after only a week. You and your doctor need to decide when Prozac (fluoxetine) is at its maximal dose for you, and when augmentation strategies are needed as well. Deplin (prescription folate) and other things, including psychotherapy, are options.

Patience: Although it was once common to take high doses of Prozac, most of the doctors I know stick to 80 MG or less (which is also the maximum standard dose for Prozac). Higher then that is considered -off label. I would not expect that the increase in Prozac would lead to improvements in a week. You & your doctor can reassess at the 4 to 6 week point.
