A member asked:

I have von willebrand disease--can a blood transfusion fix this?

Unfortunately no: Von willebrand's disease is a deficiency or abnormality of a protein in the blood that helps with clotting. This is caused by a damaged gene (or genes) that are supposed to tell the body to make the correct protein. Therefore, the only way to truly cure the disease is to fix or replace the gene(s), something we can't do yet. There are effective treatments, but they don't involve blood transfusion.

Help but no cure: The 2 main treatment options for patients with von willebrand disease (VWD) are desmopressin (ddavp) and transfusion therapy. With regard to the latter therapy, platelet transfusions may be helpful in some patients with VWD whose disease is refractory to other therapies. Cryoprecipitate and fresh frozen plasma contain functional von willebrand factor.
